They can be bare dirt or sand, or they can be covered in growing, healthy grass.
Ants will travel long distances for food. Ant trails may disappear after the food source is gone.
Grass, sand, or even cracks in brick or cement
When it comes to food preferences, ants are often sweet-seekers, grease-eaters (also known as protein ants), or everything-eaters. In the United States, “sugar ant” is a generic term for any type of sweet-seeking ant.
Don’t confuse U.S. “sugar ants” with the real sugar ant, the banded sugar ant, which is found primarily in Australia. The only thing identical about these two are their sweets-loving nature.
They invade indoor spaces, including kitchens and pantries, looking for sweet treats. They find their way inside much like other bugs and pests do: through cracks in the foundation, gaps around doors and windows, and tears in door and window screens.

Ghost ants are highly adaptable in their nesting habits, which seem to be similar to those of pharaoh ants. Colonies are moderate to large in size and can contain thousands of workers and numerous functional queens distributed across multiple nesting sites.
They are very fond of honeydew. They also feed on dead and living insects. Inside, ghost ants show a preference to sweet foods and are most commonly found in kitchens.
They don’t sting, as they lack a stinger. However, they can become a serious nuisance because they are known to nest inside homes.

Odorous house ants like to eat sweets and are especially fond of honeydew. They are known to move their nests every three months or so in response to rain.
They love to nest near moisture sources, such as in wall voids near hot water pipers, in heaters, beneath leaky fixtures and inside wood damaged by termites. Outside, they are often found in exposed soil or under stacks of firewood.
Although they do not pose a public health risk, but they can contaminate food and should be avoided. If you notice odorous on your property, contact Identify Pest Control right away!

Carpenter ants get their name from their nest building, where they will excavate the wood and form smooth tunnels inside of the wood. They do not eat wood, they only tunnel and chew through wood to create nests.
The western black carpenter ant colony, when mature, contains about 10-20,000 workers, with large colonies of more than 50,000 individuals. There is usually only one functional, wingless queen per colony.
Swarmers are not produced until the colony is more than two years old. They are produced in the previous year and held over the winter in the nest for release the following year. Swarmers appear from May until August in the eastern United States.
